Blood Donation Eligibility Requirements
Before donating, please ensure you meet the following baseline eligibility criteria:
New donors must be 18 to 60 years old. Existing donors in good health may continue donating up to age 70.
You must weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs) to ensure your safety and allow us to collect an adequate amount of blood.
You should feel well on the day of your donation. If you have symptoms like a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sores, or stomach bug, please wait until you’re fully recovered.
You must wait 6 months after any tattoo or body piercing. This precaution helps ensure the safety of donated blood.
We’ll take a small blood sample from your non-donating arm to check your haemoglobin (iron) levels and ensure they meet the safe minimum for donation.
Recent travel to areas with mosquito-borne illnesses (like malaria, dengue, or zika) may require a short deferral.

Whole Blood Donations
The most common type of donation is whole blood, which is the collection of all blood components: red cells, plasma, and platelets.
- Takes about 10 Minutes
- Men can donate every 3 months
- Women can donate every 4 months
Not all blood is the same. There are eight (8) main blood types.
Your blood type is based on two things:
- The ABO group (A, B, AB, or O)
- The Rh factor (positive or negative)
| Blood Type | Who You Can Donate To | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| O- | Anyone (Universal Donor) | Always needed in emergencies |
| O+ | All positive types | Most common type — high demand |
| A+ | A+, AB+ | Common, always in use |
| A- | A+, A-, AB+, AB- | Rare and valuable |
| B- | B-, B+, AB-, AB+ | Less common, often needed |
| B+ | B+, AB+ | Helps a specific group |
| AB- | AB-, AB+ | Very rare |
| AB+ | AB+ only (Universal Recipient) | Can receive from anyone |
Why Blood Types Matter
Blood transfusions must be carefully matched to each patient. Giving the wrong blood type can cause serious complications, including death.
That is why every blood type matters, and why your donation could be the one that saves someone's life.
- O-negative donors are often called during emergencies as their blood matches and is suitable for everyone.
- AB positive donors are the universal recipients
- Rare blood types like AB- or B- are in constant short supply.
Platelet Donation
Platelets are vital for cancer patients and those undergoing major surgeries.
Criteria for Platelet Donation
- Must have a good vein (large veins preferred)
- Must have a minimum pre-donation platelet count of 250x10-3
- Donation process takes at least one to two hours
- Frequency: Donate every 1 month
Interested individuals must register on the donor list for platelet donation
